It's Good to Be German

Celebrate Oktoberfest this weekend with beers, wieners and music

By Amy Strauss

The Irish have St. Patrick’s Day. The French have Bastille Day. Brazilians have Carnival. So when am I, Frau Strauss, proud to be German? It’s not just one day, my friend, but for a full two weeks called Oktoberfest. (Though the first festival in 1810 was actually in October, the event has since been moved a few weeks earlier for better weather conditions.)

On September 22nd, the Lord Mayor of Munich taps the first keg but the German Society of Pennsylvania kicks off the event this Saturday with a full day of eating and drinking. Although we’re burdened with uncomfortable-sounding foods like wurst, sauerkraut and Spanferkel (giant roasted pig), we will forever have the upper hand with just one little word: bier. Half a dozen imported German beers will be on tap like Doppelbock, Weisstein and other lagers. Prost!

I've heard the best Oktoberfest celebration in Philadelphia is at the German Society. Who could hold a more authentic Oktoberfest than the German Americans? Definitely one to check out this Saturday!
