Critic's Notebook: Seek Out Sun Golds

If you head to any of the area’s weekly farmers’ markets — I spied some at Headhouse Farmers’ Market last week — you’ve probably spied my current obsession: sun gold tomatoes. The bright orange jewels stand out from other cherry tomatoes, and their taste is even more dramatically different than their coloring. An heirloom variety of cherry tomatoes, sun golds are renowned for their intense sweetness. While they lend themselves to salads and pasta sauces, these beauties are really best enjoyed alone, with a sprinkling of salt. They’re the ultimate healthy snack food, as delicious and addictive as candy. Find them before tomato season passes you by.
