Gardening: Room to Grow

Pro Jon Carloftis’ perfect space for starting a garden

“A potting shed should be like a well-stocked pantry,” says Jon Carloftis, the gardener-to-celebs and author whose Bucks County shed is pictured here and on our cover. Jon has long enchanted Manhattanites with his signature rooftop container gardens.

Today, he offers his coveted services locally. His own place to plant is a 1920s garage-turned-shed outfitted with original handblown windows, an antique tool collection, myriad glass cloches and vintage pots. Any indoor planting space needs Jon’s essentials: a comfy potting bench and stool, sink, garden tools, terra-cotta pots, a galvanized tub for soil and fertilizer — and lots of natural light.
